the April quilts--since it's June now

I seem to be better about posting pictures on Instagram this year, whether it is a quilt finish or just daily updates. I really really like to have my quilts on this blog, if only to keep track of how many I make each year. April was a good month--lots of rain so lots of time to sew on my days off work.

About two years ago, I bought a stack of the Ruby Star Society fabric called Flowerland at an end of year sale here in town. It always takes me a while to decide how I want to use these. Most nicer quilting fabrics are printed once and then gone, so it definitely creates a bit of scarcity mentality. Yes, I will use the fabric---I just want to give it some time before I cut it into bits.

I saw a pattern, a traditional quilt block pattern called Broken Dishes, and decided I could do that. It uses half square triangles, which I could create 4 a time (timesaver), and could use most of the fabric from the set. WHICH turns out makes a full size quilt.

I had some fabric I recently salvaged from a storage space and used it for the backing. This quilt is now on my daughter's bed, and probably will be until it gets colder and she switches to a heavier quilt (and all her blankets).

The other quilt I finished in April was a t-shirt quilt for a mom in Tecumseh, my hometown. She wanted a quilt made with her daughter's softball jerseys and t-shirts as a graduation gift.

Working out the layout for these is always fun, figuring out how to make all the pieces work together. I found a golden yellow polka dot for the backing, and I think a charcoal gray solid for the binding. They loved the quilt--a perfect memento of her teams, teammates, and the hours she put into the game.
