July quilt 1: stars and no stripes

I have been working on this quilt for a while. I was inspired by this quilt featured on Wombat Quilts. I loved the colors, the scrappy look (and the chance to use up more scraps), and it was a different take on a quilt block I had already made. The blocks went together quickly--a couple here and there as I had time between other quilts. I made a few color changes as I determined the recipient and then stitched the top together.

As I have mentioned before, the quilting took me longer than usual. Not because I did some intensive quilting pattern. Not because I chose to hand quilt it. It took me several weeks because very few stores in my area sell perle cotton in any colors besides red, black, white, and ivory so after exhausting all those sources, I looked online. The retailer I picked (123stitch.com) had a great selection of colors and prices and quick delivery. And then I messed up my order and had to exchange two colors (again, they were great with that). Finally this week I was able to finish the last two stars. Each star is outlined in a coordinating color, and that is then outlined in white.

A little red, white, and blue for the holiday:

The backing and binding is a fun polka dot from JoAnn.

Yea for another quilty gift ready to go!
