Wandering in the Wichitas

We had an extra day of school holiday for Labor Day and decided to get somewhere outside. The weather has been great, sunny and cool. My son did a lot of mountain hiking this summer and has been itching to get back out there, so I did my best and got him to the Wichita Mountains. Not quite the same as Winter Park (as he mentioned often enough) but as good as we can get for a day trip.

It was raining a bit when we arrived so we ate our picnic in the car and started in the Visitor Center. By the time we finished in there, it was sunny so we headed outside.

The area is a wildlife preserve / refuge for bison, longhorn cattle, a lot of nocturnal animals we didn't see, and these adorable prairie dogs.

A quick hike around--and no snakes! It was so refreshing to hike without feeling like we are melting and I loved spending the day outside (away from Norman) with them. Thank you NPS for the extended holiday!
