end of Summer in northern New Mexico

Our choice for our family vacation this year was back to northern New Mexico. My first idea was Galveston, but after checking lodging prices for early August and the average temperature that time of year, I started looking elsewhere. Some friends of ours have a condo in Angelfire that was perfect even if all four of us had been able to go, so we booked that and headed north instead of south.

Our first day was mostly just driving, checking in to the condo and then finding food to eat.

The next day we visited the Farmer's Market, did a short hike (not quite acclimated to the altitude yet), got some groceries and watched some summer Olympics.

On our way to Angelfire we passed through the Cimarron Canyon State Park. We decided to go back there on Monday to hike some and look around. We didn't really have much actual hiking gear so we stuck to some basic trails near the road and found some creeks to visit

We stopped in Eagles Nest on the way back for lunch. Shannon was ready to rest for the afternoon and watch a Olympic soccer game, while Grace and I got a lift ticket to ride up to the top of the ski slope.

The next day was rainy so we just read, drew and took naps. And watched the Olympics.

Wednesday was great weather for a day trip to Taos.

More rain on Thursday.

and more Olympics

Our last day in town we went back to our first hiking area in the middle of town, and added on another couple of trails to finish the loop. We didn't see any black bears (although heard from someone that there were some in the area), just deer, birds, and prairie dogs.

The next day we headed back home, on a little bit different route through Texas just to change it up a little. It was a great vacation, with cooler weather than home, amazing scenery, and not too many people. As an added bonus, we didn't have any car trouble this time. We were so grateful for the chance to get away and rest for a bit before the fall semester started back up.
