the beauty of scraps -- July quilt 2

I pushed through over the weekend and Monday, finishing my scrap quilt for our guest room. This was one of my goals for the finish-a-long , one I was sure I could complete. It is the first bed sized quilt I have made for our family that didn't seem too small when I was finished, probably because I laid it out on the bed itself as I pieced it. I thought about a scrappy binding to use up more of them, but in the end decided on the black and white. The scrappy binding and a couple of other choices I considered got lost against the rest of the quilt. My design assistant (daughter) agreed. The backing was two fabrics I had on hand, and you can kind of see them here. I wanted something that did not require a lot of piecing to avoid competing seams on the front and back. One was a white stripe and one was a floral, both gifts. I chose a loopy daisy for the quilting and that did not go so well. Rainbow Bright - a November quilt

Every fall our elementary school hosts an International Food Festival and Silent Auction. Last year as I scouted out the items up for bid I realized I should have donated a quilt. This year I am more on the ball (slightly) and remembered this BEFORE the event. I didn't really have one already made that I felt would be a good one to donate. Around the same time as I was thinking about what to do, I saw a rainbow scrap quilt by Rachel at Stitched in Color. I have tons of scraps and this just seemed like a perfect little quilt for an elementary school auction. And now it's done. I decided to avoid fabrics with a lot of white in them, for a more bold effect. I was able to use a bold stripe for the binding and had this white fabric with little yellow flowers for the back. Love the rainbows peeking through with the sunshine!

Corner quilt--one more for May

A month or so ago one of my friends asked me to make some quilts for her soon to be built family cabin, mostly all twin size. I did have to think about that a little bit, mainly because twin size quilts (and larger ones for that matter) are a bit trickier in my smallish sewing space. And yet it sounded like a great project so I said yes. The first quilt, using Denyse Schmidt's In This Corner pattern, is now finished and ready to be delivered. Once it is not graduation week perhaps--we both have seniors this year. This floral fabric called Hawthorne by Rifle Paper Co in the center was my design inspiration for the color choices. I bought it as a fat quarter at Sewciety Quilt Company here in my town. When I buy those I am either 1) buying some basics to fill in some color gaps or 2) getting just a little bit of a fabric I love. This was definitely a love!
