the beauty of scraps -- July quilt 2

I pushed through over the weekend and Monday, finishing my scrap quilt for our guest room. This was one of my goals for the finish-a-long , one I was sure I could complete. It is the first bed sized quilt I have made for our family that didn't seem too small when I was finished, probably because I laid it out on the bed itself as I pieced it. I thought about a scrappy binding to use up more of them, but in the end decided on the black and white. The scrappy binding and a couple of other choices I considered got lost against the rest of the quilt. My design assistant (daughter) agreed. The backing was two fabrics I had on hand, and you can kind of see them here. I wanted something that did not require a lot of piecing to avoid competing seams on the front and back. One was a white stripe and one was a floral, both gifts. I chose a loopy daisy for the quilting and that did not go so well. Some, like the daisy on the left below look ok, but others ended up mor

Fall Leaves -- a September quilt

I did it. I forced myself to finish one more of those "stuffed away in a bin forever" quilts. I really wanted this one done because fall is approaching quickly and this has all of those golds and reds and browns that really only work this time of year. Especially on a tree. I used the Mosaic Tiles pattern out of the Modern Bee book. At least that's what I started with back when I started piecing it. When it was time to lay out the individual blocks, I couldn't find the book on the shelf at the library again and tried to figure it out by looking at the various ones online. Not sure that the one I copied was the same as the original but it's close. Over Labor Day weekend I found a flannel at JoAnn (on sale) that just needed to be on the back. It kinda looks like a grandma couch but also just seemed to work with the colors and the vibe of the rest of the quilt. I have one more quilt left on my list of goals for the 3rd quarter , but that one may

quilty goodness {another little May quilt}

I knew I was going by my parents' house on Monday, so I worked hard to finish up another of my commissioned quilts so I could make a delivery. Not to them but in town. It was the fourth of six, and I was a little nervous having them in the house, with an artistic little four year old who has boundary issues roaming around in my house. This was the doll size version of one I finished earlier in May . My mom was my quilt holder. She flipped the edge on this one to show the front and back, and I laughed. I told her she really must read my blog! I spent a little time this morning turning this pile into this The kids were enjoying some PBS kids. I'm gonna try to finish the quilt before the end of the month. This will be a baby quilt, one of two, for a friend having twins. The one for the baby girl uses the same line of fabric, Michael Miller's Les Amis, with a few extras added in. I will use Jeni Baker's Patchwork Chevron pattern for that o
